Turning Good into Greater Good
Join us as we explore Mill Creek as a Black Metropolis with a 200-year history, all that made it special, and its untimely and intentional erasure from the St. Louis landscape at the Missouri History Museum’s new exhibit. The event begins with a self-guided tour of the exhibit from 10:00- 11:00 am.
Local writer and author of “The Last Children of Mill Creek”, Vivian Gibson, will join us afterwards to add commentary from her memoir as she describes the rich history of a St. Louis neighborhood that historians have likened to New York’s legendary Harlem. It was the center of Black life from its origin at the turn of the 20th century to its destruction in 1959 in the name of urban renewal and the home of St. Louis’s major Black newspapers and professionals, a center of social activism, and the birthplace of ragtime. Guests welcome. Free.
